From 1942 to 1945 all organic chemistry lectures for the pharmacy students were delivered by the prominent Bulgarian scientist Academician Dimitar Ivanov (1894-1975; the inventor of the Ivanov Reagents and Ivanov Reaction) who was then head of the Department of organic chemistry at the University of Sofia. In 1954 the curriculum for students of pharmacy with regard to the teaching in organic chemistry was oriented mainly towards the presentation of biologically active medicinal compounds. The course was then led by lecturers of the newly established Department of Pharmaceutical and Organic Chemistry headed by Prof. Dimitar Dalev. For some time he delivered lectures on both subjects.
Prof. D. Danchev The first assistant professor at the Department of Organic Chemistry after 1954 was Damian Danchev (1921-1995) who was appointed associate professor in 1966 and full professor of Organic Chemistry in 1975. Until 1986 he was head of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Organic Chemistry as well as of the Department of Organic Chemistry which was founded in January, 1982. A course in chemical-pharmaceutical technology and some of the organic chemistry lectures were also delivered by Associate Professor Lyuben Velichkov (1928-1998) until 1989.
From 1986 till 1990 a part of the teaching staff was temporarily involved in a research group for applied organic synthesis. In 1990 Prof. Ivo C. Ivanov (CV) was elected as head of the department. He retired in 2009. He delivered the lectures of organic chemistry (fundamental course). Associate Prof. Ilia Manolov performed the specialised course of Chemical-pharmaceutical technology.

The Department of Organic Chemistry was closed down in March, 2010, according to the decision of the Academic Council of the Medical University of Sofia.

Lab     Main Fields of Research
  • Synthesis of polycyclic N-and O-heterocyclic compounds with fused rings (derivatives of coumarin, pyran, pyridine, pyrimidine, 1,6-naphthyridine).
  • Synthesis, chemical and pharmacological studies of ether derivatives of 3-amino-1,2-propanediol as compounds with β-adrenoblocking activity.
  • Polyfunctional enamines and their application to the synthesis of some biologically active compounds; аddition reactions to coumarin and coumarin derivatives; chemical transformations of the obtained adducts including cyclization to polycyclic systems with fused rings.
  • Synthesis and studies of 2-aminotetralin derivatives with expected adrenergic activity.
  • Isolation and chemical transformations of macrocyclic spermine alkaloids.
  • Synthesis of fused heterocyclic systems via tert-amino effect.
Medical Orientation
  • Large-scale preparation of synthetic and/or naturally occurring compounds for pharmacological and/or biological experiments.
  • Development of new laboratory routes and procedures for the synthesis of novel and/or known drugs.
